We, at NEMCARE, believe that all patients requiring transfusion should have reliable access to safe blood products appropriate to their clinical needs, provided in time and safely administered. We stand for safe and rational use of blood to reduce unnecessary and unsafe transfusions and to improve patient outcomes and safety, thus minimizing the risk of adverse events including errors, transfusion reactions and transmission of infections. The Blood Centre at NEMCARE ensures the highest safety and quality standards, and provides Packed Red Blood Cells, Random Donor Platelets, Fresh Frozen Plasma and Cryoprecipitate. The department is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and is managed by a team of technically competent staff. NAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Testing) is done to provide of the safest possible blood to the patients.
What is Blood Donation?
Blood donation is a process when a person voluntarily donates blood, to be used for transfusion or for other medical practices.
- Donating blood is a safe process. A sterile needle is used only once for each donor and then discarded.
- The actual blood donation typically takes less than 10-12 minutes. The entire process, from the time you arrive to the time you leave, takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour.
- The average adult has about 10 units of blood in his body. Roughly 1 unit is given during a donation.
- All donated blood is tested for HIV, Hepatitis B and C, syphilis and other infectious diseases before it can be transfused to patients.
Who can donate blood?
- Any healthy adult between the age of 18 to 65 years
- Weight > 45 kg; Haemoglobin > 12.5 gm/dl
- Medically fit as per the selection criteria
How frequently can you donate?
- Every three months
How long can blood be stored?
- Whole blood can be stored for 35 days
- Red cells can be stored for 35 or 42 days, depending on the anticoagulant used
- Platelets can be stored for 5 days
- Plasma can be frozen for up to a year
